About Us
Lisa Salvia – artist & potter
As a young student in high school, I was immediately drawn to clay and its tactile nature. The ability to transform clay into various shapes and forms by hand, especially using the potter’s wheel, intrigued me. It was the start of a great experience that continues to evolve daily.
What I find most inspiring from working with clay is the ability to create something completely unique. To take a lump of clay and make a beautiful piece of artwork that people will enjoy for many years to come is very rewarding. Using found objects such as leaves, fabrics, tree bark, handmade stamps and more give me the opportunity to transform the surface of the clay into something rich in texture. Glazing brings a whole new aspect to the finished piece. I experiment with many glaze options including stains, under glazes and different glaze processes in hopes to find the perfect combination to fit each piece.
Making functional ware by using a potter’s wheel is by far my favorite thing to do, however, handmade slab work and sculpture is also an important part of my craft. After 25 years of working full time in sales and marketing, I have been able to leave that career behind to pursue a pottery career full time. I opened Winking Lizard Pottery as a full time business in 2007.
I have three children and reside in Erie Pennsylvania with my husband Mark.
